How Online STD Testing Works
The process is straightforward and designed around your privacy.
Step 1: Confidential Consultation
Book a telehealth visit and speak with a board-certified provider from the privacy of your home. Your provider will discuss your concerns, symptoms (if any), recent sexual history, and which tests are appropriate.
Step 2: Lab Order Sent
Based on your consultation, your provider sends a lab order directly to a lab near you. You will receive instructions on where to go and what to expect.
Step 3: Visit a Local Lab
Walk into the lab at your convenience. Most visits take under 15 minutes. No appointment is usually needed.
The lab staff will collect the appropriate samples (urine, blood, or swab depending on the tests ordered).
Step 4: Results + Treatment
Your provider reviews your results and contacts you privately. If any test comes back positive, your provider will discuss treatment options and next steps during a follow-up visit. Many treatments can be prescribed via telehealth.
What STDs Can Be Tested?
Your provider can order testing for any of the following:
- Chlamydia — Urine test or swab. The most commonly reported STD in the United States.
- Gonorrhea — Urine test or swab. Often tested alongside chlamydia.
- Trichomoniasis — Urine test or swab. Common and curable parasitic infection.
- Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2) — Blood test or swab of active sores. Blood tests detect antibodies and are best taken 12 or more weeks after potential exposure.
- Syphilis — Blood test. Detects antibodies to the syphilis-causing bacteria.
- HIV — Blood test. Fourth-generation tests can detect HIV as early as 18 to 45 days after exposure.
Your provider will recommend which tests are appropriate based on your individual risk factors and concerns.
How Long Do STD Test Results Take?
Turnaround times vary by test type, but most results are available within a few business days:
| Test | Sample Type | Typical Turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Chlamydia & Gonorrhea | Urine or swab | 1–3 days |
| Trichomoniasis | Urine or swab | 1–3 days |
| Herpes (HSV) | Blood or swab | 2–5 days |
| Syphilis | Blood | 1–3 days |
| HIV | Blood | 1–5 days |
Your provider will review all results with you and explain what they mean in plain language.
Is Online STD Testing Really Confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is protected at every step.
- HIPAA-protected. All telehealth visits, lab results, and medical records are protected under federal HIPAA privacy laws.
- No employer notification. Your employer has no access to your medical records or test results.
- Discreet billing. If you choose to pay out of pocket, there is no insurance claim to appear on an explanation of benefits. If you use insurance, billing codes used may vary by payer. If EOB privacy is a concern, self-pay ensures no insurance records are created.
- Private results. Your results are shared only with you and your provider. No one else has access without your written authorization.
What Happens If I Test Positive?
A positive result does not mean you are on your own. Your provider will walk you through everything.
- Treatment options. Many bacterial STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis) are curable with antibiotics. Your provider can prescribe treatment online during a follow-up telehealth visit.
- Partner notification. Your provider can guide you on how to notify sexual partners so they can also get tested and treated. Some states offer anonymous notification services.
- Follow-up testing. Depending on the infection, your provider may recommend repeat testing after treatment to confirm the infection has cleared.
- Ongoing management. For viral STDs like herpes or HIV, your provider will discuss long-term management options, including antiviral medications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is online STD testing as accurate as in-person testing?
Yes. Online STD testing uses the same CLIA-certified laboratories and test methods as in-person clinics. The only difference is that your lab order comes from a telehealth visit rather than an office visit.
Will my employer or insurance company find out?
STD testing is protected by HIPAA privacy laws. Your results are shared only with you and your provider. Your employer has no access to your medical records.
If you use insurance, the claim may appear on your explanation of benefits, but many patients choose to pay out of pocket for added privacy.
How soon will I get my results?
Most STD test results are available within 1 to 5 business days, depending on the test. Your provider will review the results with you and discuss next steps, including treatment if needed.
What happens if I test positive for an STD?
If you test positive, your provider will discuss treatment options with you during a follow-up visit. Many bacterial STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea are treated with a simple course of antibiotics. Your provider will also help with partner notification guidance and schedule any necessary follow-up testing.
Which STDs can be tested for through telehealth?
Common STDs that can be tested through a telehealth-ordered lab visit include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, trichomoniasis, and herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2). Your provider can recommend a panel based on your exposure history and symptoms.
How long after exposure should I get tested for an STD?
Testing windows vary by infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are typically detectable 1 to 2 weeks after exposure. HIV antigen/antibody tests are reliable around 2 to 6 weeks. Syphilis testing is most accurate 3 to 6 weeks after exposure. If you test too early, your provider may recommend repeat testing later.
Does online STD testing cover HIV?
Yes. HIV testing is a standard part of most comprehensive STD panels and uses the same FDA-approved antigen/antibody tests run at any clinic. Results are confidential and reviewed with you by your provider.
Can I get treatment if I test positive on an at-home or telehealth-ordered STD test?
Yes. If your test is positive, your Innocre telehealth provider can prescribe appropriate antibiotic treatment (for example for chlamydia or gonorrhea) the same day in MD, WA, and DE. Some infections like HIV or syphilis require referral to a specialist for ongoing management.
Is online STD testing covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans cover STD testing when ordered for medical reasons. Coverage varies, and some patients prefer to pay out of pocket so the test does not appear on an explanation of benefits. Lab fees and visit fees are billed separately.
